Avon Solutions Sensitive Botanicals Gentle Day Moisturiser SPF 20 (review)

Avon Solutions Sensitive Botanicals Day Moisturiser
Avon sold a range of products called Liiv Botanicals which were promoted as their natural range. They can't have sold well, as they were discontinued, repackaged and bundled in with the Solutions brand and renamed Sensitive Botanicals.

They're now marketed for sensitive skin (the name's a bit of a give-away, isn't it?) – the natural angle has been pushed to one side, but each product in the range does still contain “botanical herbal extracts”.  They still contain a fair amount of artificial ingredients, too, even though most don't contain colour, perfumes or parabens. However, I've always said I'm willing to compromise on the odd undesirable ingredient if the product offers great performance and is good value for money.

Value for money is this moisturisers only major trump card, though. Full price is £7.50 which is excellent, and you get 50 ml of cream for that; however those with a good eye and a predilection for browsing the Avon website will notice that there are often offers to be had, sometimes more than 50% off is possible. So, cheap and cheerful seems to be where we're headed, and sure enough the cream itself feels cheap but smells cheerful. It has a light, cucumber-like fragrance which is pleasantly refreshing, but the texture is disappointing. I know this isn't a major concern, but I find I am more likely to repurchase a product if it's a pleasure to use, and this one really isn't. The formula is light but lacks the whipped, creamy smoothness of more luxurious moisturisers – basically it feels cheap.

It moisturises my skin adequately, although it does leave a bit of residue behind which won't absorb. It doesn't affect the application of make-up, though; I could still apply foundation base without any real difficulty. It's probably better formulated for normal skin types, although I wonder if it might not be nourishing enough for dry skin, because it's very lightweight and insubstantial feeling. I do love that it has a relatively high SPF of 20. This is ideal for most skin types in the U.K. (except in summer, where I'd recommend fairer skins go for a higher factor) although Avon doesn't supply any information on UVA or UVB star ratings.

Avon claim that this “gentle” moisturiser will “reveal skin's natural healthy glow”. I can't help but wonder if that's because while using it my skin did seem to get oily quite quickly. I suppose that's one way to look glowing! Unfortunately it also means that make-up starts to slide off your skin faster than anyone would like. I can't figure out why Sensitive Botanicals Day Cream can make my skin feel oily yet at the same time not feel especially nourishing. A bit of a conundrum, that.

The jar's design, if that's of any significance to you, is actually quite nice. The glass has a graduated green tint label on it and a shiny chrome-effect lid. Basically it looks more expensive than it is, it's just a pity that it doesn't feel as expensive as it looks. There's also a complimentary Rejuvenating Facial Cleanser, Soothing Gel Mask, Repairing Serum and Vitalising Eye Cream – with SPF 15 – if you'd like the whole set, although I wouldn't recommend this particular day cream unless you're on an extremely tight budget and have an already balanced skin type.

Affordable range of products
Natural angle is misleading
Good SPF rating
Cheap feeling texture
Quite moisturising
Leaves a slight film on the skin
