Avon Solutions Sensitive Botanicals Repairing Serum (review)

Avon Solutions Sensitive Botanicals Repairing Serum

I've reviewed the replacements to the Liiv Botanicals range - now rebranded as Avon Solutions Sensitive Botanicals, which includes Rejuvenating Facial Cleanser, Soothing Gel Mask, Gentle Day Moisturiser SPF 20 and Vitalising Eye Cream SPF 15.  So click on those links to read my thoughts on each of them.

Reviewed here is the Repairing Serum from the same family, and a familiar theme with the entire range seems to apply to the serum, too: it's cheap. Except, it's not so cheerful, this time around. The face cream, for example, although  somewhat disappointing, had a couple of worthy selling points, such as decent SPF. This serum is much harder to recommend. Yes, it is still free from parabens and it's oil-free, but unlike other Sensitive Botanicals products it contains colourants.

The role of a serum is to 'turbocharge' your day or night cream. In theory it sinks deeper into your skin thanks to its small molecules and concentrated formula, making it ideal as an anti-ageing treatment, amongst other things. Avon Solutions Sensitive Botanicals Repairing Serum doesn't seem to do much, to be honest. It's a bit nourishing, but not majorly so – dry skin will definitely need a face cream on top.

The metallic-like particles seem like a waste of time, too. I can say in all certainly that they are not sitting on top of my skin giving me a 'glow' which is what they are probably included for. The serum is completely invisible once applied which means it is thoroughly absorbed into the skin, shiny particles and all.

Another problem I found (with a few Avon products, actually) was with the dispenser. This serum comes in a pump-action bottle, but after about a weeks worth of use I found the pump kept getting stuck half way down, which meant you couldn't get a full pump's worth of serum until you twisted the pump shut and reopened it again. This was fiddly and annoying.  To top it off it doesn't reach the bottom of the container, so you need to unscrew it and shake to get the last 5 ml or so out.  The serum container also lacks the classy chrome-like lid of the cream, and instead makes do with a cheap-looking grey plastic top. On the bright side, the texture is an improvement.

I have to mark the serum down for value, too, not because it isn't affordable – it certainly is – but because it doesn't really do anything other than moisturise your face a bit. You can't charge more for a 'repairing' serum that doesn't actually repair. I don't expect miracles from any product, if I'm honest, but this really is a total let down. As a first step 'moisture booster' I can see the appeal and if you're happy to use it as such then that's fine, but that is the extent of its abilities.

Cheap enough
No noticeable skin-improving effects
Smells nice and fresh
Pump dispenser kept getting stuck
It is adequately moisturising for oily skin
