Organic Surge Volume Boost Shampoo and Conditioner (review)

Haircare is big business and natural haircare is taking an ever bigger percentage of the global haircare market worth around £26b as of 2012. Organic Surge, founded by the rather dashing Alan MacKenzie, offers everything from face, body and haircare – all of which are made up of products that have naturally derived ingredients and are free from parabens, sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate, synthetic perfume, artificial colourants, chemical antioxidants, mineral oils, propylene glycol and aggressive foaming agents. Other than the essential oils they are not certified organic, however.

Organic Surge Volume Boost Shampoo and Conditioner

What first strikes me is the difference in size between the shampoo and conditioner. I hadn't realised when I ordered them that the conditioner would be 50 ml smaller than the shampoo. So I had to go out and buy another one as I always use more conditioner. The packaging is the same shape for both, so if it wasn't for the size difference it would be easy to confuse the two in the shower! The Volume Boost range I bought is ideal for fine or flyaway hair and allegedly “builds body and strength”.

I like volumising hair products because they don't weigh my oily hair down and the shampoos clean gently but effectively, leaving my hair clean but not 'squeaky clean' which can mean the shampoo might be a touch too aggressive. Organic Surge's lather is excellent for an SLS/SLES-free shampoo, and makes it far more enjoyable to use than the Waitrose Organic Moisturising Shampoo I reviewed earlier.  It easily removed a couple of day's worth of oil, pollution, dry shampoo and styling product, but I did have to wash my hair twice.

The conditioner impresses, too. Like a lot of natural conditioners it isn't 'slick' feeling, but still feels luxurious enough to touch and it smooths nicely through my hair. Which is no mean feat considering how knotty my hair can get! It's not slick enough to comb through easily but it is nourishing enough for me not to worry about that. After rinsing (which was easy for both products) and letting my hair air dry, it looked very shiny and had a jovial bounciness to it, which suggested health and vitality; which is useful if you don't feel as well as you look. People would never know if you're under the weather with such peppy-looking locks. This is partly down to the comfrey and echinacea extracts which are used to enhance fine hair.

I do need to point out that the bottles are hard to open, though. Perhaps it was just my batch, but the conditioner lid in particular was so stuck on I had to stop the shower and get a knife from the kitchen to prise it open! I ended up keeping a knife in the washroom just for this purpose, which might've looked a trifle odd to visitors. On the bright side, though, Organic Surge is against animal testing and the bottles are easy to recycle.

Both products are well-priced and effective and they're free from all the main questionable ingredients as well as being animal friendly. All together, this makes them a very good buy indeed!
