Aveda Invati Exfoliating Shampoo & Thickening Conditioner (review)

Aveda Invati Exfoliating Shampoo & Thickening Conditioner
Thickening hair products are a lucrative part of the haircare market, and it seems to be growing. In recent times big name companies such as Aveda have invested huge sums of money into creating a specialist range that adds genuine oomph and substance to fine and thin hair. Why bother when there are plenty of volumising products on the market, you might be wondering?

I think it boils down to perception. Thick, full hair looks healthy (even though having fine hair is not usually a sign of ill-health), and this is compounded by the fact celebrities nearly always sport luxuriant manes – often enhanced with weaves – and are held up as shining idols we should admire and emulate. Simply adding volume to your hair doesn't seem to be enough, it has to look thicker and more voluptuous than ever. It's a tricky issue.

What Aveda promises with it's new Invati range goes beyond mere thickening properties. Invati is designed as a solution for thinning hair, and is made up of shampoo, conditioner and scalp revitaliser. Aveda claims that you can reduce hair loss due to breakage by up to 33% after twelve weeks of using the Invati 'system'. Reassuringly, 97% of the ingredients are naturally derived and as with all Aveda products no Invati product is tested on animals (even though parent company Estée Lauder does shamefully profit from animal testing).

I bought the Exfoliating Shampoo and Thickening Conditioner to try. Both products are only 200 ml in size, and being priced at £19.50 and £21.50 respectively places them firmly in the premium category. This is not a range for bargain hunters! The packaging is a dark red-brown colour, and thankfully the containers are different shapes so you shouldn't get them confused in the shower. The lids are sturdy and easy to use when wet.

So, the shampoo. It's a lovely light caramel colour and smells fresh and flowery, with a hint of herbs. Its creamy, opaque formula feels supremely luxurious but still lathers and cleanses effectively. Aveda says that it will “renew the scalp with wintergreen-derived salicylic acid.” which isn't as scary as it sounds. Basically, the shampoo aims to thoroughly cleanse the scalp as well as your hair.

A poorly cleansed scalp, blocked with sebum and hair products, will hinder hair growth. Denisplex (no, I haven't heard of it, either!), turmeric and ginseng help to invigorate the scalp and you can feel them working; I had a slight tingling sensation after application.

The rapeseed-derived conditioner is a darker crème brûlée colour, but like the shampoo it feels like a properly luxurious product. The thick formula smooths through hair well and still rinses out easily. Sugar beet amino acids and soy protein help to strengthen the hair while kukui nut oil adds shine. The conditioner lives up to its promises as it left my hair feeling more substantial and when dry it retained it's shine and bounce.

It's important to note that I didn't use the scalp revitaliser because I couldn't justify spending £84.00 on haircare just before Christmas (the revitaliser is £43.00). I also didn't use the range for three months – as 200 ml simply doesn't last that long! Therefore, I'll have to give Aveda the benefit of the doubt regarding their impressive claims. Because while I did notice my hair feeling denser after continued use, I can't claim it looks much different, but with long-term use I think Aveda might be onto something here...
