Lip Balm Special: Dr. Hauschka / Burt's Bees Pomegranate / Lavera Basis Sensitiv (review)

On test here are three natural lip care products, the latter two (Burt's Bees Replenishing Pomegranate Lip Balm and Lavera Basis Sensitiv Lip Balm) were from the original February review, which has been updated.  Now also included is Dr. Hauschka Lip Balm.  The first two come in twist-up tubes, while Dr. Hauschka's is in a pot.  All are formulated without SPF (so better suited for evening use and those trying to avoid extra chemicals) - for sunscreen protection for lips please read Lip Balm Special: Natio Moisturising SPF 30 / The Body Shop Vitamin E SPF 15 / Dr. Organic Manuka Honey SPF 15.
Dr. Hauschka Lip Balm

Dr. Hauschka Lip Balm

My lips took a while to adapt to this lip balm. However, after the first 24 hours I found it was worth sticking with because it's a perfectly nourishing balm. It leaves my lips feeling soft and very smooth, with a hint of healthy looking shine. I wouldn't normally buy a pot that you have to stick a finger into – it was a much appreciated birthday gift from fellow beauty blogger Richard – but it's not as big an inconvenience as I thought. Hygiene isn't an issue if you keep your hands clean whenever you put them near your mouth, and whatever balm is left on your finger you can rub easily into your hands, which I like. (It's nourishing there, too!) It also smells nice (but what's 'parfum' doing in the ingredients listings, Dr. Hauschka?). I found it didn't last very long and it's very expensive in the first place.

Burt's Bees Replenishing Lip Balm With Pomegranate Oil

Different flavours are available, which I like – variety is the spice of life, afterall! The addition of fruit oil hasn't compromised the naturalness of the product, either – Burt's Bees claim it's 100% natural, but it's not organic. The balm itself is a bright, pinky red, like lipstick, but don't worry it does go on completely clear! Its smooth texture glides easily over your lips, leaving them feeling soft with a hint of natural-looking shine. It also smells nice – very fruity, actually – making it nicer to use than some plainer balms. The tube is a bit narrow for my liking, but it's not a major criticism, I still like it.

Lavera and Burt's Bees
Lavera Basis Sensitiv Lip Balm

This contains organic jojoba and almond oils to soften and nourish lips and is free from synthetic preservatives, perfumes, colourants and mineral oils. It is, Lavera claim, “dermatologically tested for skin tolerance.” And it's true, this really is the gentlest lip balm I've ever used, however, it's also the least desirable. The beeswax coloured stick – which wobbles in its container – tastes of mild olive oil, which is fine for a salad, but I don't like it on my lips. It really could do with jazzing up with fruit oil or something, but then it wouldn't be 'Sensitiv', I suppose. It is genuinely nourishing, though, and helped protect me from harsh weather conditions – unfortunately it feels a bit gritty after a couple of uses. Not nice.
