JĀSÖN Thin To Thick Extra Volume Hair Spray (review)

JĀSÖN Thin To Thick Extra Volume Hair Spray
The name 'Jason' is Greek and means healer, an appropriate name (if somewhat unusual) for a brand that prides itself on being a 'natural pioneer since 1959'. JĀSÖN claim to be one of the first brands to create cosmetics without the use of harsh chemicals and they guarantee all their products are free from parabens, phthalates, SLS/SLES and petrolatum. Not only that, but they're animal friendly products, too, having never been tested on defenceless creatures.

The Thin To Thick range has had good reviews, and when I saw it on offer I thought I'd give it a go! I'm starting with the hair spray, which is light weight and body-building. There's also a matching shampoo, conditioner and scalp lotion – all are priced at £8.29. This means they're priced at a semi-premium level, just below Aveda's Invati thickening haircare range, which is highly regarded here at Beauty Insignia.

What sets this apart from other hair sprays is a number of ingredients to help restore body and life to lacklustre hair.  Panthenol  is added because of its strengthening properties; green tea 'helps stimulate hair growth'; while vitamins A, B5 and H (more commonly known as vitamin B7 – AKA biotin) are included to make hair feel soft and nourished.

I like the packaging – the blue and white design is eye-catching, and it sprays well, too. The mist is very fine so you don't accidentally overload your hair and the spritzer never seems to clog. There's a lot of information on the back so you know exactly what you're getting in terms of ingredients, company ethics and product aims, too.

The hold is somewhat disappointing, though. One application doesn't give me enough support, my hair's still pretty flyaway. If you take the time to layer the hair spray, though, you can build up enough hold to keep your style in place. But make no mistake, this is definitely a very light hold styling product. This suits me, but if you're looking for strong hold you might want to try the alternative TRESemmé product listed on the bottom of this review, instead.

On the bright side, though, the light hold means your hair is very natural looking plus it's extremely easy to brush out. Brushing out and reapplying doesn't make your hair greasy, either. I also love how soft this makes my hair. It's actually touchably soft, which is very unusual for a hair spray and one of the benefits of using a lighter product.

I was worried that JĀSÖN Thin To Thick Extra Volume Hair Spray wouldn't be able to justify its cost, and in many ways it could be improved to make it better value. That's not to say I don't like it, though. With a few extra coatings you can get the sort of hold that'll satisfy most people (and you'll enjoy using it, as it smells so nice), and you can rest assured that it's made with more natural ingredients than most hair sprays plus it's non-aerosol, so all-in-all it's definitely worth trying to see if you like it as much as I do.

YES!
NO!
Leaves hair feeling softer
Expensive for a humble hair spray
Light shine makes hair look healthier
Not especially volumising
Free of most concerning ingredients
Hold is weaker than I'd like
Lovely fragrance (pity it's partly artificial)
