Olay Essentials Wet Cleansing Wipes (review)

These wipes from Olay - one of the world's most profitable skincare brands (and part of the enormous Procter & Gamble Company) - might not be natural, but they are designed for sensitive skin types. This means the cleansing lotion each wipe is impregnated with isn't harsh, and there's no fragrance, alcohol or parabens which can cause irritation. They are dermatologically tested, but as you can read in the 8 Biggest Beauty Jargon Terms Explained post, that doesn't necessarily mean a whole lot!

Olay Essentials Wet Cleansing Wipes

The simple blue packaging – the usual plastic with resealable sticky label – has rather small writing and is mixed up with three other languages. Plus, it only contains 20 wipes! This is a bit of a bugbear of mine. In the early days of facial wipes, most packets contained a months worth of cleansing if you used them once a day. These days most manufacturers have cut the number of wipes in their products from 30 to 28 to 25. Olay are really taking the biscuit with just 20. It's not even as if they're a good size! I find them smaller than most and they're quite slippery, so they really aren't easy to hold as you try to swipe them across your face and neck.

The good news is they do live up to their sensitive billing. They didn't cause my (non-sensitive) skin any irritation whatsoever. A better test is freshly waxed eyebrows, and again there was no discomfort. The cleansing aspect is fine, but you will need an extra wipe to remove heavy make-up as they're not wet enough to get away with just one. They promise not to clog pores, however, and I found this to be true, even on my oily skin.

They do, however, shred a bit. They feel quite strong, but when used vigorously on especially greasy areas (such as the side of the nose and chin) they left little white bits of fluff. There is a faint aroma, but it's barely noticeable (there's no parfum added, which is good). At under three pounds a pack they work out at 13p a wipe, but you can get bigger packs of face wipes that are easier to use and cleanse just as well. If you use these Olay wipes twice a day, you'll have to re-buy them every 10 days!  That's reason enough, in my book, to look elsewhere.

YES!
NO!
Very gentle, but still a decent cleanser
A bit too small for my liking
Suitable for all skin-types, even oily
Can shred a bit

Too few in a packet – very stingy!
