Decléor Aroma Cleanse Fresh Purifying Cleansing Gel (review)

Decléor Aroma Cleanse Purifying Gel
Decléor, along with owner Shiseido, dedicate time and money to studying aromachology - the influence of odours on human behaviour, such as links between certain scents and emotions like happiness, comfort and love. Decléor might be hoping they can create a link in our minds between their products and a positive emotion, thereby giving users a positive impression of the brand as a whole. This is the cynical side of me speaking, though, perhaps they just want us to be happy?

The biggest benefit to Decléor's decades-long research into fragrances is the wonderful smell of their products. In the (many) years I've been using their products I've always been enamoured with the wonderful perfumes which pervade even humble face and body washes, and while the perfume may not be 100% natural, they invariably make each product feel 100% luxurious.

The Design
And so here we have a rather large bottle of Aroma Cleanse Fresh Purifying Cleansing Gel (for combination to oily skin), where refreshing peppermint, tea tree and witch hazel combine with divine ylang-ylang to create an ultra-premium face wash. The curvy bottle looks great and is still easy to hold, while the pale green colour and matte silver cap are subtle and elegant. Most super-sized bottles are clunky and utilitarian but Decléor manages to avoid this pitfall.

The Performance
The gel is pretty watery, so care is needed not to drip it everywhere (and don't squeeze the bottle too hard!). The lather you get is good and as mentioned it smells great. Massaging in the foamy liquid is easy, and it doesn't sting my eyes. It's certainly refreshing and cooling to use and yet it is gentle enough to use with an exfoliating facial mitt or some-such if you like. It rinses off easily and doesn't dry out my skin at all – even after I've dried off. My face doesn't even feel tight when I've been busy doing my hair after a shower and have delayed moisturising for a good 20 minutes or so. Naturally I didn't suffer any breakouts using this wash; my face looked bright and clear.

The Price
The 400 ml size I bought cost £32.00, so it's cheaper to buy than the 200 ml bottle if you work it out per 100 ml. Both are still quite pricey. The large size is not available all year round; it tends to reappear around Christmastime, but you can sometimes find 400 ml bottles in duo packs which double the cost. It will last you a very long time, though, as a little goes a long way as it foams up so well – you can thank the disappointing addition of sodium laureth sulphate for that.

The Ingredients
While there are pure essential oils included in the ingredients listings, you'll also find the above mentioned SLES (slightly better than SLS, but still totally unnecessary and potentially irritating), parfum, propylene glycol and five – yes, FIVE – parabens! So no, this is not a natural choice in the slightest. Bearing in mind how much Decléor charge for their products, they really have no excuse in using such cheap ingredients and could easily use suspicion-free alternatives instead.

The Summary
I bought this face wash because I'm a fan of the aromachology-based fragrances used throughout the brand's range, as well as the reliable performance you can almost guarantee with Decléor no matter what product you buy. And performance is the key strength of this face wash; it really is faultless in this regard. However, I wouldn't buy it again. I can tolerate using a face wash with so many of Beauty Insignia's 'use with caution' ingredients as a one-off, but I know there are lots of face washes without parabens, SLES, propylene glycol and artificial perfume that work just as well. Decléor Aroma Cleanse Fresh Purifying Cleansing Gel is great as a (rather expensive) luxurious experiment, but an experiment is all it will ever be.

Smells absolutely gorgeous; a total pleasure to use
Come on Decléor, cut out some of the crap!
