This Works: Deep Calm Bath and Shower Gel (review)

I rarely see the point in spending large amounts of money on everyday items such as shower gel because, well... body wash isn't anything special. Or can it be? To find out I surprised even myself and spent £15.00 on just two hundred millilitres of cleanser from luxury brand This Works. It's their Deep Calm cleanser with relaxing essential oils of vetivert, patchouli, chamomile and lavender for a super soothing shower treat. Or bath treat. It's a double duty product, although I only used it as shower gel.

How can I not talk about the price? It's going to have to be outstanding to justify this kind of money (incidentally, since purchasing it I've seen it advertised anywhere from £12 to £19, so shop around). To start with there's the packaging, which is very simple, and certainly doesn't look like it cost upwards of ten pounds. I really don't see the need for extra boxes and pumps for everyday toiletries, but nevertheless, that's what you get here. I haven't bothered with the pump as the cap dispenser works perfectly well but it's nice that it's included for those who prefer it. I'd rather they left it out and made the product cheaper, personally. It's all solid and well made and any cardboard used is FSC certified.

The most important thing is the gel itself and whether the promises of deep relaxation have any merit, and here This Works delivers the goods. It smells simply amazing. A strong herbal essential oil blend wafts throughout the washroom everytime I use it (to the extent I've received compliments), and it really is extremely calming! It lightly scents your skin too, so you can smell the essential oils for a good while after cleansing, giving you the maximum amount of aromatherapy benefit.

It needs a body polisher or loofah to foam properly but even without these tools it still cleanses really well, and does so without drying out my skin. As an added bonus I also found it helped to clear my skin, too. The stubborn small, red blemishes that appear every so often have all but cleared up! It normally takes a full detox to sort that out.

The natural angle is equally impressive. This Works state on the box that there are no mineral oils, synthetic fragrances or colours, GM ingredients, sulphates, parabens or DEA included and on their website they say that neither the ingredients they use or the finished products are ever tested on animals. This is excellent news, and sets a good standard for rival natural companies to look up to.

If it wasn't for the price I'd buy this all the time; it's that good. I can't spend £15 on a small bottle of shower gel, though, it's just too much for something that doesn't last very long. And 200 ml doesn't last long at all! There are lots of good points, though, including the genuinely relaxing essential oils, the non-drying formula and the natural ingredients; so if money's no object, give this a shot!
