Giovanni Eco Chic Root 66 Max Volume Shampoo and Conditioner (review)

This range is a premium attempt at eco hair care, being vegetarian friendly, free of animal testing and made with organic ingredients and without phthlates, parabens, sulphates or artificial dyes and fragrances. This is the volumising collection for “limp, lifeless hair”, which mine isn't, but I like a bit of bounce in my style, and volume-enhancing haircare tends to do the trick. In the Eco Chic range there's something for everyone, including dry, normal, dandruff, oily and 'all' hair types.

The Root 66 shampoo and conditioner contain horsetail extract to “increase body and shine while infusing weightless texture”. They're also designed to be extra gentle, to make them suitable for thin, fragile strands and are claimed to be strengthening and protecting. Giovanni also say this range will add “weightless bounce”, which is essential for more lively looking locks.

They both smell lovely and fruity; and are a pleasure to use. The liquidy shampoo even lathers well, and not just 'for a natural shampoo', either, it's good by any standard. The light foam cleanses effectively but to remove oil and styling residue from very soiled hair you will need to lather twice. The creamy conditioner needs more effort to work in but once you have, it softens hair effectively, while never weighing it down. You end up with shiny, healthy looking hair after use that smells lovely.

While the bottles are attractive, Giovanni appear to be in the transition between one confusing design with both English and French in small fonts and an all-English version with sleeker decals and more information. Either way, both the shampoo and conditioner are easy to extract despite the unusual shape (the shampoo is quite runny, so no issues there, but you need to shake the conditioner bottle upside-down).

I think eight pounds is actually OK value, even though it's pricier per 100 ml than some rival organic products, such as the excellent Dr.Organic collection. Certifying ingredients as genuinely organic is a costly business but it brings with it reassurance, which makes it worthwhile for many. I'd certainly give this range a whirl again, but Giovanni is getting harder to find in the U.K., but our U.S. friends shouldn't have as much of an issue.

Cleans and conditions really well; hair always looked great
Not widely available in the U.K. You'll have to look on-line
Very ecological formula – no animal testing or mineral oils
