Ojon Rare Blend Deep Conditioner Intensive Restorative Treatment (review)

Ojon Rare Blend Intensive Restorative Treatment

I get through a lot of intensive conditioner because my hair is long, dyed and occasionally styled with heat.  This treatment from Ojon is the most expensive treatment I've ever tried (click on Hair Treatments to see the others!) and now I've been using it for a couple of weeks, I feel I can answer the most significant question: can Ojon justify the £29.00 asking price?  At nearly twenty pounds per hundred millilitres it's expensive by anyone's standards. Read on to find out if Ojon lives up to its premium billing.

This is a 'dual phase' intensive conditioner, with the amber-coloured side of the tube filled with a “restorative blend of 7 rare oils” (ojon, shea, muru muru and kokum amongst others) and the ivory-coloured side made of a “moisture-rich cream infused with deeply nourishing plant-derived conditioners”. It looks fancy but the colour's purely cosmetic and could easily be made without. While this does contain artificial colourants there's not a huge amount in the ingredients listings I'd be too concerned about – you can read them below for yourself – but make no mistake, this isn't a very natural option and doesn't pretend to be.

The creams, while different colours, are the same texture: a thick, smooth gloop. And I mean that in the nicest possible way. It doesn't smooth through hair brilliantly, but with a little massaging you can eventually cover every strand, although for maximum coverage I combed it through with a wide-tooth comb. It smells nice, too, a lovely combination of enticing fruit butters. Ojon say you only have to leave this on for two minutes and surprisingly I found this was enough, so it's quick to use in the shower for a quick nourishing boost. You can, of course, leave it on for longer for even more benefits.

The results were impressive, with even wet hair feeling coated, but not in a heavy or oily way. Instead it felt like my hair was protected from the elements; a feeling that continued while it was drying. While my hair is a little less bouncy after use, the smoothing effects on my rather unruly, wavy locks is not under-appreciated. Very little tames my wild waves, so to find an intensive conditioner that does the job is very impressive. It's certainly an indulgent product to use, and feels expensive like a proper salon treatment.

Fine and straight hair, though, might find this too overwhelming and should probably look for a lighter formula or a wash-out treatment, although some other reviewers with fine hair have found it still works for them (among those my Mother who is pleased with its reparative qualities). I'd normally suggest you try it and see for yourself, but at £29.00 I wouldn't blame you if you thought better of experimenting.

Despite the positive results, there are other intensive conditioners that work almost as well for half, even a quarter of the cost. The hair repairing ojon oil that forms the basis of the brand might well be an excellent nourisher but it's not a big enough selling point. £29.00 for 150 ml is poor value for money, you simply don't need to spend so much on conditioner to reap similar rewards. For that reason alone this is not a product I would readily recommend.
