Martha Hill Mimosa Hydrating Day Cream (review)

Martha Hill is a beauty brand developed and sold by its namesake back in the 1960s to compliment her independent fashion house – Martha Hill Ltd – which started in 1942. The cosmetics and toiletries ranges were 'greener' than most with simple packaging which made use of recycling

Martha Hill Mimosa Hydrating Day Cream

Martha Hill was “one of the pioneers of the natural beauty movement” according to Beauty Naturals, the company that sells these products today. There's a wide selection to choose from, but the basics are divided into three: Evening Primrose, Honey and Mimosa. It's the latter I'm interested in, and the day cream I'm testing is described below.

A fragrant, light cream to maintain hydration and protect throughout the day. Maintains moisture balance and leaves skin smooth and supple.”

It wasn't clear which range would be most suitable for my normal/oily skin type, but Mimosa seemed the most 'general'. All products are suitable for dry skin, apparently, and specialist products are available for both face and body. The entire range is, quite frankly, a little bewildering.

I expect UV-protection with my day creams and Martha Hill does provide some, but doesn't elaborate on the packaging. I got in contact to find out some specifics and this was their response: “I am sorry but we do not have a declared SPF for this cream. Although a sunfilter is included the level will only be low...”. Fair enough!

Luckily the fragrant, off-white cream sinks in well enough to make additional SPF application non-problematic. Or you could do what I did and top up your protection with sunscreen make-up primer and face powder. This is fine for Spring, but for the Summer months a proper SPF product is essential.

Despite the dry skin tag, I can imagine this works well on most skin types. You can apply it thickly to drier areas if needs be and smooth it lightly over the t-zone as I have done on my oily skin. Either way it leaves skin feeling softer, smooth and ready for make-up (if applicable).

Bearing in mind the natural ethos of Martha Hill, the cream's ecologically sound. It contains natural emollients, fruit extracts, vitamins and essential oils. It's made without parabens, primary petrochemicals and colourants, but there aren't any organic ingredients.

Unusually, the parfum ingredients are identified. They call it 'Hydrafleur' and it's made up of “an active blend of floral oils and essences”. For more information see the Beauty Naturals website.

The travel size (15 ml) is expensive, but the rest of the range is more reasonably priced – if you want a small size for taking away, then buy a bigger jar and decant the contents! You don't need to apply a lot, though, so it should last you a while.

I just wish the packaging looked better. While it's effective, you'd never guess my 50 ml jar cost £12.00, it looks more like £2.00 with its cheap white plastic and old-fashioned gold-style band. There's not enough information on the labels, either – ingredients listings are only available on the website, and I've no idea where it was manufactured.

Overall I find this to be an interesting, effective product from a brand I'd never heard of before. It's always a bit of a gamble trying new products from unknown source, but I'm glad I did and will no doubt try other products from the Martha Hill collection; I've already got my eye on the cream cleanser and toner!
