VO5 Plump It Up Dry Backcombing Spray (review)

Back-combing can be damaging to your hair, so if there's a product that can do the job without assaulting your crowning glory, then I'm all for it. That's the main aim of this Plump It Up Dry Backcombing Spray from VO5. It's designed to give you “big, glamorous up-do's the easy way” and will “give your hair fabulous bounce and volume”. On top of this it acts like a “pick me up” to revamp your style. Sounds promising!
VO5 Plump It Up Dry Backcombing Spray

To cut to the chase, I'm underwhelmed. It's a powder spray – think dry shampoo – yet, ironically, it doesn't work as well as special volumising dry shampoos. While this isn't a grease-absorbing product, it should give you some grip (the back-combing effect), some body (the plumping part) and some vibrancy (the style re-activator) but it can't do any of those things particularly well. It doesn't really do anything positive at all to my hair.

Using it on freshly washed, dry hair I found it as useless at giving my hair extra va-va-voom as TRESemmé Texture Style Divine Definition Spray. It made my hair a little heavier, a little flatter and not in the slightest bit vamped up. It felt soft, though. Too soft, in fact, to give it any up-do potential! The most frustrating thing of all, though, is VO5's Give Me Texture Instant Oomph Powder works so much better than this. I'd choose that every time, but I appreciate some aren't so keen on the tacky texture of the gritty powder, and would prefer the more natural feel of this dry spray.

On the bright side it's easy to use; spraying easily and exactly where you want it. I even quite like the smell – although it is strong – and it's certainly affordable. One review I read suggested using it on damp hair but I ran out before I could try it this way. It worked for her, but VO5 are quite clear that it should be used on dry hair only. It's up to you! Interestingly, I used it on day-old hair that had dry shampoo already in it; I just wanted a little pick-me-up for the evening. Plump Me Up actually worked quite well when used with dry shampoo and hair spray. It gave me a touch more height and the finish was nice and matte.

I've also got the similar Give Me Texture spray to try (review to come!) but after using Plump It Up I've got very little hope that it'll be any better. This is a very disappointing hair styling product, but the idea is great... spray in volume? I'd be a fan for life if it worked! Unfortunately, this doesn't.

Feels and looks natural
Very little grip in my hair
No noticeable added volume

Dry shampoos work better

Not a replacement for a little back-combing
