Avon Today Eau de Parfum (review)

Avon Today Eau de Parfum

Having appreciated the easy-wearing, subtle scent of Avon's Tomorrow eau de parfum, it's only right that I extol the virtues of sister-scent Today, as well.

Tomorrow can be worn anytime, anywhere, but it lacks the brightness of more summery scents like Today. Today is arguably my favourite of the three initial perfumes Avon released back in 2004/2005. There's an inherent freshness that appeals and a more unique make-up than the others in the collection. It's no surprise to me that it's still on sale a decade after its début; afterall, it's a FiFi award winner and most Avon customers rate this five stars.

I love the big cube bottle. It's so heavy it could double up as a paperweight! While two years have passed since I bought it, the curvaceous plastic lid has gone cloudy and the box writing is too faded to read easily.

The quality of the rest of the packaging cannot be faulted. It's got a good, strong spray which dispenses an attractive golden liquid, but sadly I took a picture once it was all gone – sorry about that!

Avon describe this as a “gentle yet captivating, beautifully feminine floral scent” but I think that's a bit misleading. While it is gentle, it's too subtle to be truly captivating. (With a rather weak sillage you won't turn heads unless you wear a lot of it, either.) I don't think it's a perfume to lure a lover; it's a perfume to wear because it makes you feel good. It's a cheery face in a bottle!

I also think that some open-minded men could get away with wearing Today. There's a touch of the metrosexual in its make-up with it being rather clean smelling. The official composition is top notes of freesia and cactus sap, a heart of white pepper and strelitzia. Base notes include sandalwood, cedar, musk and rose water.

Initially it smells rather 'green' but gets more elegant and feminine as it dries and evolves. It's not as feminine as Avon suggest (if you want that, try Tomorrow) but it is certainly classy and subtle. Its subtlety is half its appeal.

Like it's Love Trilogy brethren you can wear this anywhere; you won't choke people in a crowded theatre or repel dates with an aversion to perfume. Today is friendly and all-encompassing: suitable for everyone, offensive to no-one.

My only aside is Today doesn't feel like a winter scent to me. I'm sure other people wear it all year round, but I prefer something stronger and more potent when the clouds draw close and the rain comes. Other than that, it's great, and so affordable, too! £14.00 for a genuinely likeable bottle of perfume is impressive. I may be a bit critical of Avon's skincare but they really know how to make a decent, affordable fragrance.

Bright, fresh and vibrant
Some say it smells too synthetic
Easy to wear
Lasting power isn't very good
Amazing value for money

Very Spring-like/Summery

Love the chunky bottle!
