Garnier Soft Essentials Ultra-Cleansing Wipes (review)

Garnier Soft Essentials Ultra-Cleansing Wipes
Garnier is one of those brands whose expansive range and use of bright colours, natural-biased advertising and legendary name all hold massive appeal. Many years ago, it was Garnier I turned to when I wanted my first anti-ageing cream. I was 18 and wasn't as ecologically conscious back then!

No longer do the cheery, effervescent adverts full of beautiful people tug at my purse strings as much as they once did, and that's because I realised their suggestive natural advertising is misleading: “We use, wherever possible naturally derived active ingredients …” While these wipes, for example, do contain almond oil and rose extract, the rest of the ingredients are pretty artificial. And that's true across the Garnier range.

Being a part of the L'Oréal family means there's animal testing involved too. These wipes are not made of recycled material nor do they appear to be biodegradable. Artificial fragrance is included (that's why the rose scent is so strong). They're opthalmologically and dermatologically tested, which doesn't mean a great deal.

According to Garnier these wipes should remove even waterproof mascara without rubbing. I don't wear that, so can't comment, but it does remove all other make-up. But they're not as damp as the “2 doses of cleansing milk in 1 wipe” claim suggests. They weren't dry, per se, but two wipes are needed if you want to remove make-up then cleanse properly afterwards.

They're a good size too and they don't shred, even if you're aggressive with them (although why you would be is beyond me!). Even though they contain perfume and alcohol, they're not drying, and should be OK for most skin types – just bear in mind they're designed for normal to dry.

Perhaps I'll try the other wipes in the Garnier collection, the 'Fresh' ones look interesting. But while these 'Soft' ones are effective enough, I can do without the strong fragrance and would prefer something wetter to get a really thorough cleanse. Not a bad effort, though.

Soft, gentle cleansing
Scent is too artificial and too strong
Bright, cheerful packaging (easy to read, too)
Need two wipes for make-up removal and cleansing
