Jo Malone Earl Grey & Cucumber Cologne (review)

Jo Malone Earl Grey & Cucumber Cologne
Jo Malone Earl Grey & Cucumber Cologne is an unpredictably fresh, bright and airy fragrance without even a suggestion of the aroma of my old mathematics teacher about it. That was my fear for it, because the very idea of tea in a fragrance isn’t a kind one and, if anything, a thought I find redolent to junior school—learning the alphabet by wrote, presided over by a stout and stern man who drank so much tea he reeked of it and for whom sporting remnants of cucumber sandwich in his scraggly moustache were daily occurrences.

This isn’t a brown-corduroy-wearing, slipper-donning, let’s-just-stay-in-and-watch-Countdown type of fragrance. It is surprisingly novel, crisp without warning and, actually, doesn’t smell much like tea at all. The reference, I think, comes from the inclusion of bergamot, which of course is one of the most fragrant notes from a cup of Earl Grey. The cucumber is aquatic, true-to-life and very well done and doesn’t possess the ersatz zing of faux cucumber that one might imagine it could. There’s also vanilla, beeswax and musk, which give it a gentle, clean aroma.

A masculine scent as much as a feminine one, this is an all-purpose, people-pleasing fragrance (yet perhaps also an acquired taste) that is light enough for a summer treat but might fade away in winter. It isn’t necessarily a fragrance well suited for the evening, either, unless it is a hot summer evening, in which case it would make a wonderful change from hackneyed sea-breeze-inspired alternatives. But I’ll wear mine around the office where it will cling too close to the skin to become a nuisance to anybody but will provide comfort and tonic to me.

Although light, this fragrance gleams. With proven Jo Malone quality and a little sparkle, it has a brilliant build that is capable of lasting a whole day from a spritz or two.

In Jo Malone tradition, it can be found in both 30 ml and 100 ml glass spray bottles, the former just the right size for travel. But what I really want is a body lotion incarnation that I can apply in the morning and begin the evening by fragrance combining with a spatter of Pomegranate Noir. Now that would be a pairing second-to-none.

Lovely, understated but elegant packaging
Few details about what the product contains
Great quality fragrance

An inspired take on a bergamot-based fragrance

Layers well with other Jo Malone fragrances - particularly Pomegranate Noir, in my opinion
