Aveda Witch Hazel Light Hold Hair Spray (review)

Aveda Witch Hazel Light Hold Hair Spray
Aveda market a variety of haircare products, and some of them are quite brilliant (check out our review of Aveda's excellent Invata shampoo and conditioner). On test here is a haircare basic: hair spray, and the witch hazel based formula is suitable for all hair types and styles that need a light hold.

Efficacy
Easy to use spray distributes just the right amount to lightly coat your hair in controlled bursts. If you use too much it can make your hair a little crispy, but you soon learn to adjust the application to suit. I'm not sure I agree with the 'light hold' claim – it's more medium hold, and lasts quite a while, too. If you feel you need a pick-me-up, you can layer more on top without it making your hair greasy (or even drying it out as some can).

Value
Compared to, say, Avon Naturals Lime Blossom and Verbena Zesty Mist Hair Spray, Aveda's version looks expensive but in actuality, it works SO much better I think it's worth every penny. In this case, you really do get what you pay for. But Avon wins the smell test. While I normally like gthe smell of witch hazel, in Aveda's hair spray it's … unusual.

Ecology
Aveda always performs well in this regard and this hair spray is no exception. The bottle is made with at least 80% post-consumer high-density polyethylene
(HDPE), for a start, and it's a pump-action spray rather than an aerosol so no propellants! While there's unidentified fragrance, as far as hair sprays go, it really isn't bad at all, and the fact lots of natural extracts are included is great – one of them is even organic!

Summary
Leaving aside the fragrance, which is subjective, the performance of Aveda Witch Hazel Light Hold Hair Spray is hard to fault. It's easy to use, last well and doesn't affect the condition of my hair. It's an Aveda hair care staple, and I can see why. It's definitely a stronger hold than the 'light' label would suggest, but it doesn't leave my hair artificially stiff. It's a good, really natural all-rounder!

YES!
