Waitrose Organic Cleansing Facial Wipes (review)

Waitrose seems to be the best of the big British supermarkets for organic produce, and this extends not just to food but cosmetics and toiletries, too. Unfortunately their certified organic Moisturising Shampoo and Conditioner (Beauty Insignia's first ever review!) was disappointing but how do their Cleansing Facial Wipes fare?

Waitrose Organic Cleansing Facial Wipes

So much better. The cloth is very strong, smooth (although not especially soft) and moist enough. They cleanse well and won't irritate; you can use them around the eyes and they'll even remove some make-up – although a couple of goes are required for heavily made-up faces. I didn't find them drying on my combination-oily skin, instead my face felt clean, refreshed and looked clear.

So far so excellent. While the label and film aren't recyclable and the wipes don't appear to be biodegradable, the latter are 100% organic. The cleansing lotion is 95% organic, too, so you won't find any ingredient nasties here. Best of all the certifier is the Soil Association who have the strictest organic standards of the lot; it's very reassuring.

Admittedly the packaging is rather nondescript and I don't think the organic and Soil Association labelling is at all obvious enough. They've got a brilliant selling point with those yet most consumers are unlikely to spot them on the packed shelves. It's time for a revamp, Waitrose, and while you're at it, could we have biodegradable cloths, too?

You might be thinking: “what's the downside? Are they expensive?” Many people assume that organic = costly, but these wipes prove it's a misconception. 30 wipes cost just £2.49 so they're great value for money, especially bearing in mind how effective they are. But my local store's discontinued them, so they're getting difficult to find. If you can find some I do highly recommend them.
