Beverly Hills Formula Perfect White Black Toothpaste (review)

Beverly Hills Formula Perfect White Black Toothpaste

To my mind dental products are more about hygiene than beauty and that's why they haven't featured very heavily on Beauty Insignia. There is a review of Lush's Aquatic Toothy Tabs – an interesting natural alternative to toothpaste – but here I'm reviewing a more traditional whitening toothpaste with a twist.

And the twist? It's black toothpaste. Jet black. Genuinely! I've never seen anything like it, but when Beverly Hills Formula offered to send me a pack to try I couldn't resist. It contains activated charcoal which gives it that surprising colour; there's no artificial colourant added.

The charcoal is designed to help combat bad breath and when combined with hydrated silica it gives you a “high performance whitening boost” as it helps to remove tannins (as found in coffee, tea, wine, berries and spices) which can stain your teeth.

Importantly it does all this without harming your enamel – an essential selling point for me as I suffer from bruxism and need to protect my enamel as much as possible! Thankfully, Beverly Hills Formula also include 1,400 ppm of fluoride to strengthen and protect enamel.

Does it work? Amazingly, yes. It's not often I'm impressed by a toothpaste's whitening claims but this really delivers. Now, the results are never going to be as good as you'll get with a dentist treatment, but it's the best whitening toothpaste I've ever used. My teeth seemed to have whitened by one shade which is good bearing in mind they were pretty white to begin with.

The black gel turns your saliva a dodgy grey colour, but rest assured there's no staining involved! By the time you've finished brushing the foam has turned white and your teeth should be smooth and gleaming. There is quite a lot of foam, which I appreciate some people don't like, but thankfully the standard mint flavouring isn't too strong.

It's even quite good value. While ~£5 is at the mid-to-top end of the whitening toothpaste market, when you take into consideration the generous 100 ml, it doesn't look too bad at all. And because it's so foamy, you don't need to use a lot, either.

I'm much more impressed than I was expecting to be. It really did whiten my teeth, and did so quite gently. The black gel is unusual but not at all off-putting and I like that it's not too minty. I could do with a little less foam (and an alternative to SLS!) but I still think it's a great buy.
