Herbal Essences Dazzling Shine Intensive Mask (review)

Herbal Essences is one of those brands that's guilty of using extensive natural imagery to insinuate that their products are genuinely natural. While they have made some headway into the less-chemically polluted haircare market with their Naked products, this intensive hair mask is not from that collection.

Herbal Essences Dazzling Shine Intensive Mask
Needless to say it contains silicones, artificial perfume, propylene glycol and artificial colour amongst other things. However, it is free from mineral oils and parabens. While Herbal Essences claim they do not test their products on animals, their parent company – P&G – DO test on animals.

It's not a very accessible product to use for those with mobility or sight issues. The lid has no grips making it trickier to open – especially when wet – and the writing on the tub is too small and white (on a very pale green background) so it's hard to read.

Applying the cream is easy, though. Simply smooth from root to tip and leave on for five minutes. Rinse. Herbal Essences say you should get hair that smells refreshingly citrusy and has a dazzling shine. It does smooth through hair easily enough and then rinses out without much effort and doesn't leave a residue.

Hair feels softer – even when damp – and when left to dry (and it dries naturally, I rarely use heat styling these days!) my hair did have a nice shine to it. To be fair, it's not any better or worse than any other mainstream, low-priced hair mask. Cheap but cheerful seems like an appropriate phrase for this mask.

But unfortunately the smell is also cheap; it's a plasticy citrus smell that I'm not keen on at all. That combined with the allure of more natural products that perform even better (even for a reasonable price!) means there's not much to recommend this, despite the fact it basically does what it promises.

Hair looks shiny and healthy after use
Contains still too many undesirable ingredients
Easy to apply and rinse off
Not impressed by artificial citrus smell
Parabens and mineral oil-free
Tub's writing is difficult to read
Very affordable
