Botanics All Bright Purifying Face Scrub (review)

Botanics All Bright Purifying Face Scrub

This is, as far as I can tell, the very first face scrub that we've tested on Beauty Insignia. This surprised me as I've always been a fan of exfoliation, but I did switch from specialist scrubs like this, to facial loofahs instead.  I guess it's been a while! Now I'm tired of the latter and am delving into the world of exfoliation creams and lotions again.

Boots' offering (from their plant-based Botanics range) for all skin types claims to “buff away impurities” and will “reveal brighter skin”. It's made with walnut shell, apricot seeds, hibiscus and natural AHAs. Boots recommend you use it 2–3 times a week, massaging it in gently using light circular movements.

The cream is porridge-coloured with flecks of hard brown walnut shell dotted throughout. It's not a thick cream and feels quite light. This makes spreading it around your face easy. Boots should probably emphasise that light movements are essential – if you press too hard you might find the walnut shell to be rather scratchy.  Sugar based exfoliators are less scratchy in my experience.

On its own it does exfoliate, and very effectively, too. However, I don't feel it adequately refreshed my face so I did use this in combination with my regular cleanser which is in-line with Boots' advice. I'd recommend a gentle cleanser to go with this scrub as anything designed for normal to oily skin might leave your face feeling too dry.

Botanics is normally excellent value for money and while this isn't exactly expensive, it is surprisingly more expensive than the evergreen St. Ives collection. However, Botanics counters this with some good eco-credentials. The packaging is made from 25% recycled content, it's vegetarian, there are no serious ingredient concerns and its made with lots of natural extracts while Botanics do not partake in animal testing.

Would I buy this again? Sure, but maybe only when it's on offer (a regular occurrence with Boots, I find). It does everything you'd expect of a face scrub: it's natural, cleans and smooths and is easy to use; you can't ask for much more than that.

YES!
