Calvin Klein True Lustre Lengthening Mascara – Brown Lustre (review)

Calvin Klein True Lustre Lengthening Mascara – Brown Lustre

I'm very fond of a natural looking visage. That doesn't mean I avoid make-up altogether. On the contrary, I've spent time perfecting the no-make make-up look! This is partly down to necessity – it would look weird and feel inappropriate to wear a lot of make-up to my nursery school (that's my day job) – but it's also a personal preference of mine.

While I'm happy with clear mascara (it does double duty as eyebrow tamer, too!) I do have long, blonde lashes that benefit enormously from coloured alternatives. Black mascara is far too dark for me; the contrast between my lashes and hair is too much, in my opinion. Brown mascara, however, is much more appropriate. Some browns are darker than others, but this Calvin Klein brown is bright yet subtle.

The packaging is OK; the mascara tube is boxed and it's all good quality. The wand is more important, though, and I have mixed feelings here. While the longer, thicker lashes get coated effortlessly with the wide-spaced bristles, smaller lashes at the corners of your eye are harder to get at. I also find that the wide spaces between the rows of bristles can leave small clumps on the lashes which need wiping away.

As I said above, this brown shade works well on my blonde lashes and pale complexion. If you want a subtle look then this will do the trick. Personally, I'm not looking for intensity, but more a subtle colouring-in. If you want something bolder then I'd suggest you try the black shade or try something with volumising effects.

The look you get...
Speaking of effects, this promises to lengthen and I feel it does sort of give that effect. Again, subtle is the keyword here, there are no dramatic transformations to be had! I doubt you'd notice the effects at all on dark lashes, though.

During the day (or night)...
It dries quickly and leaves the lashes feeling fairly soft and flexible – the mascara will flake off if you touch it too much, though. I touched my eyes accidentally and found specks dotted around my cheekbone afterwards but only after a full day's wear. It's not waterproof, which is worth remembering if you have to venture out in the rain!

Taking it off…
Removing this mascara requires soaking and softening of the formula with a suitable cleansing lotion and careful wiping of the lashes. Some face wipes simply aren't moist enough to do this (like the ones I'm currently using, unfortunately!) so a specialist product may be required. However, I've tried removing this with a couple of gentle face washes and on both occasions the mascara disappeared without a trace.

And the naturalness…?
Don't get your hopes up – this is as artificial as make-up gets, pretty much. If you're worried abut chemicals entering your body, however, I wouldn't worry too much as make-up such as this shouldn't be 'invasive' – assuming you're careful not to get it in your eyes.

Value for money?
For a premium-branded mascara it's not too bad (and there seem to be offers aplenty at the moment) but you can get equally as good mascaras for under £10 without much difficulty, making this seem too expensive. I think there's a lot of brand appeal rather than product appeal with CK's True Lustre Lengthening Mascara. This is not a bad product by any means, but I think I'll try something else next time.

Colour is great – bright but not too obvious
Wand can leave clumps
Lashes do look a bit longer
Much too expensive

Starts to flake after a working day
