Avon Smooth Minerals (Calming Effects*) Powder Foundation – Ivory (review)

Mineral powder make-up became the 'in thing' a while ago. It's easy to use, more natural, gentler on the skin and gives decent but lightweight coverage. It also works brilliantly on combination to oily skin types, but there are versions for dry and sensitive faces, too. Mineral powder foundations are good for light touch-ups on the go, as they don't look caked on.

Avon Smooth Minerals Powder Foundation

Avon's take isn't a particularly natural option with parabens added for their preservative effects. It's arguably better than their liquid foundations, though. At £10.50 a tub it's affordable, too, and a little goes a long way so one pack should last you aaages!

The design of the packaging is rather good. With the lid on you turn it upside down, tap the bottom, open up and inside through a clever dispenser is a small amount of powder. It's certainly a cleaner system than just shaking it out. A quick swirl with a kabuki brush, shaking off the excess, and you're good to go.

It's easy to build up coverage so you won't overload your skin and this is exactly what I look for in foundations. Few people need comprehensive coverage (especially the young who might not need any); most days a little of this foundation powder applied to my t-zone is all that's required. Assuming you've got the colour right, of course!

When I originally bought this foundation it was winter and the pale Ivory shade suited my extra pale complexion down to the ground. However, now – in the peak of British Summer – my skin has tanned (despite the best efforts of my SPF 30 face cream) and it no longer suits me. I've never been one for using different shades for different seasons, but maybe I should start! It's worth mentioning that this offers an SPF of 15 for extra protection.

Surprisingly I do find that application to the normal (i.e. not oily) areas of my face can feel drying. I never suffer from dryness so this was unexpected. The rest of my face felt fine, though, it's easy to blend in with the right tools and doesn't make me look doll-like or overly matte. Giving it a few minutes helps it sink in so it looks completely natural; almost like I'm not wearing anything at all.

For areas that do need more coverage you can top it up by applying more powder. It's builds nicely with no discolouration or noticeable patches. I have no need of finishing powder after use (even in Summer weather) with a decent final result that's smooth, even and natural.

The only significant downside is how it holds up against the competition. I've used other mineral foundation powders that aren't in the least bit drying, and give an even smoother, more polished look. But for just over a tenner Avon's version isn't bad at all.

*In case you were wondering, this foundation is branded 'Smooth Minerals' which has been discontinued. Avon renamed it 'Calming Effects' sometime last year but I've been told it's essentially the same product.
