Dr. Organic Aloe Vera Toothpaste and Mouthwash (review)

Dr. Organic Aloe Vera Toothpaste

This is my first venture into more natural dental products. It's something I've been putting off based on the incorrect assumption that they can't look after my teeth as well as 'regular' brands. However, Dr. Organic is a brand I trust implicitly having had nothing but positive experiences with the rest of their range.

Surprisingly Comprehensive
This positivity lead me to take a closer look at their Bioactive Oralcare collection and I was surprised by what I found. Genuinely organic products, toothpastes with flouride in, whitening formulas, not to mention guaranteed fresh breath confidence. Basically, everything I've been looking for.

Flouride – Yay or Nay?
Flouride is a somewhat divisive ingredient. Some people avoid it because of its rumoured toxicity and vague links to certain illnesses. Personally I won't use toothpaste without it because my adult teeth came through with 'soft tops'. Flouride helps to maintain their strength and its worked very well for me.

Different by Design
Where Dr. Organic's range differs from my usual teeth caring products is in the use of polysaccharide-rich aloe vera as a base. It's also got whitening silica and Icelandic moss extract, horse chestnut for gum health and real peppermint for a burst of freshness. That's just the toothpaste, the mouthwash adds arnica, Indian pennywart and grapefruit seed extract. Basically, they're both chock-full of natural extracts.

Extra Friendly
You won't find any parabens, SLS/SLES, harsh preservatives or artificial fragrances or colourings (except the mouthwash which contains green colouring). The mouthwash is alcohol free and neither that or the toothpaste contain animal-derived ingredients so are suitable for vegans. Naturally, neither is tested on animals and feature the reassuring bunny logo.

Use Like Any Other
These are toothpastes and mouthwashes like any other and you use them as such. The toothpaste is a translucent gel and foams enough (not too much!) and the green mouthwash is very freshening and doesn't sting at all. They can both be used by adults and children of all ages – the only stipulation is children use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.

After Effects
The toothpaste gives you a reassuring deep clean feel and my teeth looked bright. The mouthwash doesn't give you that zingy feeling which brands like Listerine do, but it still feels like its effective and my mouth felt noticeably fresher.

Dentist Approval
While my dentist and hygienist haven't personally approved these products I did explain that I'd been using more natural oral care products for three months and asked if there's been any noticeable change in my teeth. I was told my teeth are as strong and healthy as they were last time which was very reassuring.

Value for Money
The toothpaste is a very reasonable £4.49 for 100 ml while the mouthwash retails at £5.99 for 500 ml. I think they're good value for money especially when you buy them as part of Holland & Barrett's occasional Dr. Organic deals. They're certainly more affordable than some rival natural oral care products.

Final Summary
This rather long review was necessary, I felt, because toothpaste and mouthwash aren't things to be taken lightly. Looking after your teeth isn't just a beauty regime, it's also essential for health. With these two products I think you'll be in safe hands, though – if they could create an enamel-repairing derivative I doubt I'd use anything else.

Genuinely effective dental care
I would like an enamel remineralising option
Freshens and revitalises naturally

Pretty good value
