Ecover Mizu Simply Soothing & Perfectly Nourishing Body Washes (review)

Ecover Mizu Simply Soothing & Perfectly Nourishing Body Washes

When Ecover (yes, the very same people known for their household cleaning products!) first cottoned on to the booming natural cosmetics market, their first attempt at body washes was disappointing. It was nothing to do with their efficacy, but because they used Sodium Laureth Sulphate and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate as a foaming agents. Simply Soothing has been reformulated without them, while Perfectly Nourishing appears to have been discontinued.

'Simply Soothing' is marketed as containing lavender and aloe vera. It does contain a small amount of Aloe Barbadensis leaf juice, but there's no real lavender. I'm assuming it's part of the artificial 'parfum' but I can't smell it. Bearing in mind there are three lavender flowers printed on the packaging it feels like a con. The fragrance of this body wash could best be described as generic.  Perfectly Nourishing isn't much better fragrance-wise.

But back to the efficacy. I don't have any qualms here, they still foam well (especially with a shower puff) and cleanse gently but effectively. I suspect all members of your family – even young'ns – could use them without issue. I do like that the design is non gender specific and the bottles are easy to open and free-standing.

Between 85% and 96% of the ingredients are of natural origin and they are free of parabens.  Also, all of the packaging is recyclable - Ecover won a UNEP award (United Nations Environment Programme) for their “environmental and humanitarian achievement”. Their body washes are also cruelty-free with the bunny logo to certify them as such.

Value is good, too, as they retail for around £3.55 for a standard-sized 250 ml bottle. Unless you're on a strict budget I feel these body washes are half the products they could have been. To use 'parfum' instead of real lavender oil is pretty bad, especially bearing in mind the wondrous effects the real essential oil can have on the mind and body. Ultimately, both just feel… cheap. They feel made down to a price and that turns me off.

Gentle (paraben-free) cleansing suitable for the whole family
'Process improved fragrance' used instead of the real deal
Effective if unoriginal packaging
Pretty generic and bland
Low prices
