Giorgio Armani Sì Eau de Parfum (review)

Giorgio Armani Sì Eau de Parfum
The advertising video (shot by Anne Fontaine and featuring an ethereal-looking Cate Blanchett) for Sì is a good indicator of the kind of market it's aimed at: sophisticated women, aged thirty to fifty who want something pretty and alluring but not too powerful or in any way controversial. Funnily enough, that's exactly what you get.

Sì was created by Christine Nagel and is undoubtedly a very pretty perfume. It's markedly classier than the most common – and somewhat overly sweet – scents than are dominating the market at the moment. It's lighter than I was expecting, or should that be tamer. I thought there'd be more oomph or guts to it, so it's rather more inoffensive than I'd like.

I'm not afraid of a little perfume drama but I'm still happy to wear this when I want to feel more sensual, but it's not sexy enough for date night. It opens with Sicilian bergamot, mandarin oil and liqueur de cassis. The heart is made up of absolutes including rose de mai, neroli and Egyptian jasmine before chypre base notes of patchouli oil, blonde woods, amber and Orcanox are blended with the sweet accord of vanilla absolute.

I get quite a fruity hit – blackcurrants? – at first, then the flower heart comes through and this is what stays with me the longest. The rose is very subtle but the jasmine is much stronger, which is no bad thing, it reminds me of my garden in Summertime. Ultimately it's the base that appeals the most. It's warm, comforting and elegant and lasts a long time. One morning application will keep me going all day.

I love the beautiful simplicity of the bottle – a simple, clear cuboid with the pale gold liquid shining through, topped off (quite literally!) with a jet black cap. The box is pale peach with contrasting black writing (some of it is very small and hard to read, though). It's all good quality, too, with a weighty lid and solid bottle. Top marks.

Leaving aside the pretty packaging, as I know that doesn't matter a jot to some of you, the contents are well worth trying for yourself. It's classy, elegant and rather mature. Maybe now I'm in my thirties I'm leaning towards the more sophisticated scent then my frivolous perfumes of old, but what Sì definitely isn't is an 'old lady' scent. It's relatively expensive so a better value larger size might be tempting, but don't buy a big bottle until you've worn a sample for at least a day.

Very pretty and certainly elegant
Tamer than I was expecting
Base is gorgeous, sensual and lasts for ages.
Parent company L'Oréal tests on animals
High quality, sophisticated packaging
